Gloomhaven - "Three Spears" class unlock
It feels like only yesterday that I was unlocking my previous character in Gloomhaven, maybe I’m just getting lucky with my Personal Quests? In any case, my next unlocked character is the “Three Spears” class, so if you don’t want any spoilers stop reading here.
The Valrath Quartermaster, as he is actually known, is a really interesting class to play. He’s all about the items and even has a few ways of refreshing items that would otherwise be used once per scenario. That being said, he does need a few levels and a lot of times before he can really hit his stride.
Right out of the gate I made a couple of mistakes here, firstly I didn’t clean the horrendous amount of flash on this miniature and secondly, I should have primed him black instead of grey. The reason I should have primed him black is that only afterwards I realised that I wanted to paint him in a similar style to my Sun character as they are, minor spoiler, the same race. And as such I wanted to paint their armour in a similar way. Unperturbed I gave all armour a basecoat of Leadbelcher. The parts that I wanted to remain silver I then gave a coat of Bascilicanum Grey contrast paint and the parts I wanted gold I painted with Iyanden Yellow.
WIth the armour done I could focus on the remaining details. So with that in mind I painted the various leather details on him, such as his satchel, boots, gloves and the million pouches that he is festooned with, with Mournfang Brown. To differentiate the sword scabbards I painted them with Dark Fleshtone as it makes a nice dark brown leather colour. The scroll in his hand I painted with Rakarth Flesh. His tunic I painted with a couple of thin coats of Jokaero Orange in keeping with the burnt orange colour scheme of his ability cards. Each of these areas I then washed with Army Painter Strong Tone.
The face and tail I painted with a few layers of Kislev Flesh before giving it a wash with Army Painter Red Tone to match the reddish nature of Valrath skin. Unfortunately though, Red Tone does have a bit of a glossy finish so I then gave the skin areas a thin coat of matt varnish. For the hair I painted it with a couple of thin coats of Ulthuan Grey before giving it a wash with Apothecary White contrast paint.
All that was left to do was the base, which I did in the same way that I do for all of my Gloomhaven miniatures: coat the base with some Stirland Mud texture paint, once dry wash with Army Painter Strong Tone, and finally drybrush with Tyrant Skull. Painted the rim of the base, stuck on some grass tufts and the Quartermaster was done.
One more boardgame miniature complete, still more than seven hundred left to go… Well you know what they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day. And I’m definitely not going to be able to paint seven hundred miniatures before the end of the year. But that doesn’t mean I won’t try. In any case, I enjoy painting at my own pace.
Boardgame miniatures left to paint: 701
Boardgame miniatures painted this year: 65
