Warhammer Twitch Preview - Animation Special
Minor audio issues again! This is becoming a trend for Warhammer streams.!
Technical difficulties aside, I’m very excited to see what is shown today, the Astartes series is in my opinion one of the greatest interpretations of Space Marines I have seen to date, and I have watched the Angels of Death trailers more than a few times. And I’m not even a fan of Blood Angels or Tyranids!
So many things shown in the trailer. I could make out Angels of Death, some anime style Space Wolves, Death Korps of Kreig against some Orks, some Age of Sigmar stuff. Interesting that it was intercut with clips from the trailer that was released along with the ninth edition of the rules. If nothing else, it really showed off the range of animation styles that we will be seeing.
Blacktalon. Focuses on the story of the Stormcast Eternal Naeve Blacktalon, who is apparently the personal hunter of Sigmar. No further details aside from a single line of dialogue.
Iron Within. Undoubtedly about Iron Warriors, in particular their invasion of an Imperial world. Here’s hoping it takes some queues from the Storm of Iron novel.
Altar of Wrath. Focuses on a Chaplain from the Black Templars chapter as they battle some Necrons. What sins might a Black Templar Chaplain have to confess to? Wrath seems like it would be encouraged if nothing else.
High Lords. Unsurprisingly about the High Lords of Terra, recent novels like Watchers of the Throne have cast some light on these hereto unseen characters in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
Broken Lance. Thought it was an Age of Sigmar thing, but it’s about an Imperial Knight household, of which a portion has broken off and turned to Chaos.
Hammer and Bolter. An anthology series, sounds similar to the Love, Death and Robots series on Netflix. Looking forward to seeing a lot of one shot stories.
Astartes II. Nothing to say here, really really looking forward to this. As said above, it is a fantastic representation of Space Marines and visual storytelling.
Interrogator. Supposedly very dark story telling, which is rather fitting for anything that involves the Inquisition.
The Exodite. Seems more about a Tau stealth team than the Aeldari Exodites, but it’s nice that this near forgotten faction is getting some attention.
Pariah Nexus. The titular Pariah Nexus has popped up in a few bits of lore recently, namely the most recent Kill Team box and I think a recent Black Library novel.
Angels of Death. “Blast that thing from the void!” favourite line from the offerings so far. Absolutely looking forward to seeing Blood Angels face off against the Tyranids. I may have to read Devastation of Baal at this rate.
Speaking of Angels of Death, we got to see the first five or six minutes of the first episode. So, let’s get into it. Spoilers if you haven’t seen it yet. You have been warned. So it opens with a Terminator facing off against some Genestealers, said Terminator is looking a little worse for the wear missing an arm. But the stormbolter sounds meaty and the Genestealers are dying in droves, at least until it runs out of ammo. Next up, after the title sequence, is a Space Marine kneeling in prayer. Seems to be having some weird flashes of visions, some PTSD or something to do with the Black Rage? Or something more prophetic? He seems like he was in the Deathwatch at some point, keen to see how that plays into the story. The conversation with the Chaplain is where things take a bit of a down turn in my opinion, walking around the Space Marines don’t seem to have the mass than I would expect. Also, the lip syncing with the dialogue isn’t great. Finally, we get some shots of the bridge of the Sword of Baal, and it’s bigger than I expected. To the point that the captain has to speak to a crewmember, who is in the same room, over the vox. I always imagined voidship bridges to be compact like in Star Trek, but I guess it makes more sense for them to look like a giant church in Warhammer 40,000. Final note, the release date is apparently in July! So excited for this.
WarhammerPlus is a new thing, more details on the 23rd of June. It sounds like a new app if I’m honest, or a streaming website. Maybe something like Disney+, which has me a little worried as Games Workshop doesn’t have anywhere near the amount of content to justify a subscription service.
