Gloomhaven - "Saw" class unlock

Been a while since I unlocked anything in Gloomhaven. In fact, we didn’t even unlock this in the board game but in the digital version. But I figured as the cat is out of the bag I may as well paint the model. So if you do not want to know what the “Saw” class is, stop reading here. You have been warned.

The “Saw” is unsurprisingly the Sawbones class, a character that seems to be what passes for a physician in the world of Gloomhaven. If that physician had a saw that was the size of your leg. And seemingly had a quiver of spare sawblades on his back.

For the basecoats I started by painting the skin with a few thin coats of Cadian Fleshtone and his hair with Vallejo Cold Grey. As befitting his status as a medical professional I painted his shawl with Ulthuan Grey. The clothes he is wearing underneath his medical shawl I painted with Vallejo Khaki. The leather details such as his satchel and vambrace I painted with Mournfang Brown. The pelt that he is carrying, hopefully not from a previous patient, I painted with Two Thin Coats Dungeon stone. I went with the colder greys for his hair and the pelt because I felt that doing them in warmer browns would detract too much from the white on the model. To finish the model off I painted the handles in his quiver and the flasks with Corvus Black, then the sawblade and armour with Scale75 Thrash Metal.

With the basecoats done I could make a start on the washes. The skin I washed with Reikland Fleshshade, the brown and leather details I washed with Army Painter Strong Tone and the metallics and hair I washed with Nuln Oil. For the white uniform, I gave it a coat of Apothecary White contrast paint.

I started the highlights with the skin by first layering with Cadian Fleshtone. I then highlighted the most prominent areas like the cheek bones and the tip of his nose with Kislev Flesh. I did a similar approach with the white uniform, first layering with Ulthuan Grey and highlighting it with Army Painter Matt White. For the hair, I mixed the Cold Grey with some Matt White and picked out a few individual strands. I finished off the face by carefully painting in the eyes with Matt White for the sclera and a dot of Black Templar contrast paint for the pupils. They didn’t turn out too badly, less crazy eyed than some of my previous attempts.

At this point, I didn’t really like how the vials and flasks looked. With that in mind, I repainted them with Incubi Darkness and the corks with Rhinox Hide. I then highlighted them with Vulkan Green.

The base was done in the same way that I do for all my Gloomhaven miniatures. First I slapped on some Stirland Mud and once that was dry I washed it with Army Painter Strong Tone. And once that was dry I then drybrushed the base with Tyrant Skull. I then diluted down some Blood For The Blood God technical paint and used bursts from my airbrush to splatter blood on his clothes. Whilst I had it out, I then also added some Blood For Blood God to his saw blade. Finally, I stuck a tuft onto his base and painted the rim with a few coats of Army Painter Matt White.

With that, he was done. Might be a while before I get to use him in-game, although one of my current characters is on the personal quest to unlock him. Looking forward to getting to play him though.
